Possible Causes

Foreign object jammed between shredder ring and impellers, Jammed turntable (grind plate), Bent or seized impeller arm, Overheated motor rotor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and disconnect power at the plug or breaker. Never reach into the chamber with your hand.

  • Step 1 – Use the jam-buster (hex) tool: Most AmazonCommercial disposals have a 1/4" hex socket in the center of the motor base. Insert a 1/4" Allen wrench and rock it back and forth to free the grind plate. Do not apply excessive force.
  • Step 2 – Clear visible obstructions: With power OFF, use tongs or pliers and a flashlight to remove bones, metal, glass, or other hard items from the grinding chamber. Do not use your fingers.
  • Step 3 – Press the reset button: After freeing the jam, press the reset/overload button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks.
  • Step 4 – Test with water running: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly switch the unit ON. If it spins freely and sounds normal, the jam is cleared.
  • If still humming only: The impeller plate or motor shaft may be bent or seized. Continued humming can overheat the motor; discontinue use and plan for motor or unit replacement.
