Possible Causes
Food residue stuck under splash guard, Grease buildup on grinding ring and chamber walls, Sludge in P-trap and tailpiece, Infrequent flushing with water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the disposal switch. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners.
- Clean splash guard: If your American Standard model has a removable rubber splash guard, pull it out and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. If non-removable, scrub in place with a long-handled brush.
- Scrub chamber: With power OFF, use a disposal-safe brush and hot soapy water to clean the inside walls and underside of the splash guard.
- Deodorize naturally: Pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the disposal, followed by 1 cup white vinegar. Let it foam for 5–10 minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Ice and citrus flush: Run a tray of ice cubes and a few small citrus peels through the disposal with cold water to help scour the grinding components.
- Clean drain trap: If odors persist, remove and clean the P-trap and horizontal drain arm to eliminate sludge.
