Possible Causes

Long-term rusting of grinding components, Motor shaft bearing failure, Hardened debris cemented in chamber, Unit not used for extended periods

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Ensure power is OFF at the breaker before applying force to the rotor.

  • Attempt gentle freeing: Insert the hex wrench into the bottom of the American Standard disposal and gently work it back and forth. Do not use excessive force that could crack the housing.
  • Apply penetrating oil externally: You may spray a small amount of penetrating oil on the exposed shaft area under the unit (not inside the food chamber) and let it sit, then try again.
  • Do not over-force: If the rotor remains extremely stiff, internal components are likely seized.
  • Replace disposal: A severely seized unit should be replaced; internal mechanical repairs are not practical.
