Possible Causes
Loose slip nut on discharge elbow, Misaligned discharge tube, Damaged rubber gasket between disposal and elbow, Cracked PVC tailpiece
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power to the disposal. Place a bucket or towel under the drain piping.
- Tighten connections: Hand-tighten the slip nut connecting the American Standard discharge elbow to the drain trap. Use channel-lock pliers for a slight additional snug, but do not overtighten.
- Inspect gasket: If leaking persists, disconnect the elbow from the disposal outlet and inspect the rubber gasket. Replace if flattened, cracked, or missing.
- Check for cracks: Examine the PVC or metal tailpiece and elbow for hairline cracks. Replace any damaged sections.
- Reassemble and align: Reinstall the elbow, ensuring it is straight and not under stress from misaligned piping.
- Test: Run water with the disposal off and then on, watching for leaks at all joints.
