Possible Causes
Failed internal shaft seal, Corroded grinding chamber, Cracked lower housing, Long-term water intrusion into motor area
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and unplug the disposal. Do not operate a leaking unit.
- Confirm bottom leak: Dry the outside of the American Standard disposal. Fill the sink and observe. If water drips from the bottom center or seams of the housing, the leak is internal.
- Rule out plumbing leaks: Verify that the sink flange, dishwasher inlet, and discharge elbow are dry.
- Do not disassemble motor: Internal seals and chambers are not serviceable on these units.
- Replace disposal: Remove the old unit and install a new American Standard disposal or equivalent, following the installation manual and using new mounting hardware and putty.
