Disposal runs but makes loud rattling, clanking, or grinding noises not typical of normal operation.

Safety first: Turn OFF the switch and shut OFF the breaker. Never reach into the disposal with your hand.

• Visual inspection: Shine a flashlight into the American Standard disposal. Look for foreign objects such as spoons, bottle caps, or glass.
• Remove debris: Use long-handled tongs or pliers to carefully remove any objects. Rotate the turntable with a wooden stick to expose hidden items.
• Check impeller arms: Ensure the impeller lugs move freely and are not broken off.
• Test briefly: Restore power, run water, and turn the unit on for a few seconds. If noise is gone, run for 30 seconds to flush.
• Persistent harsh noise: If loud metal-on-metal noise continues with no debris present, internal components may be damaged and the disposal should be replaced.
