Possible Causes
Dried or cracked plumber's putty under sink flange, Loose mounting ring, Warped or damaged sink flange, Corroded sink surface around opening
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and unplug the disposal if it has a cord. Do not work under a unit that is not securely supported.
- Confirm leak source: Fill the sink with a few inches of water and observe from below. If water seeps around the top of the American Standard mounting assembly, the flange seal is leaking.
- Support the disposal: Place a sturdy box or stack of wood under the unit to support its weight.
- Remove disposal: Rotate the mounting ring counterclockwise to release the disposal from the sink flange and set it aside.
- Re-seal flange: From above, remove the old flange. Scrape away old putty. Roll a rope of fresh plumber's putty and apply under the flange lip. Press the flange into the sink opening and reinstall the mounting hardware from below, tightening evenly.
- Reinstall disposal: Hang the American Standard unit back on the mounting ring and lock it clockwise. Wipe away excess putty squeezed out at the sink.
- Test for leaks: Reconnect power, fill the sink, and check again from below.
