Possible Causes
Switch not rated for motor load, Worn internal contacts, Loose wire connection at switch, Arcing due to high inrush current
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker before working on the switch. Do not ignore visible arcing or crackling.
- Inspect switch: Remove the cover plate and gently pull the switch out. Look for discoloration, melted plastic, or loose wires.
- Tighten connections: Ensure all wires are firmly secured under screws, not just backstabbed. Move backstabbed wires to screw terminals if possible.
- Replace switch: Install a new switch rated for at least 15A and suitable for motor loads. A heavy-duty or spec-grade switch is recommended for disposals.
- Test: Restore power and operate the disposal. If arcing persists, have an electrician inspect the circuit.
