Possible Causes
Failed wall switch contacts welded closed, Miswired constant hot to disposal, Faulty smart control relay stuck on, Shorted switch loop
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the breaker feeding the disposal. Do not leave a self-running disposal energized.
- Verify switch wiring: With breaker OFF, remove the wall switch cover and confirm the disposal is wired through the switch, not directly to constant hot.
- Replace switch: If wiring is correct but the disposal runs whenever the breaker is ON, replace the wall switch with a new one rated for motor loads.
- Check smart control: If using an American Standard smart or remote control, disconnect or bypass the control module to see if the problem stops. Replace the module if its relay is stuck.
- Test operation: Restore power and confirm the disposal only runs when the switch is ON.
