Possible Causes
Tripped GFCI outlet feeding the disposal, Open circuit in wall switch or control module, Loose wire connection in junction box on disposal, Failed power cord or plug
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the circuit breaker to the disposal before touching any wiring. Never put your hand inside the disposal chamber.
- Check GFCI outlet: If the disposal is plugged into a GFCI receptacle, press the RESET button on the outlet. Test the outlet with a lamp or tester to confirm power.
- Verify wall switch: Turn the breaker back on, flip the disposal switch and listen for any click or hum. If nothing happens, test the switch with a non-contact voltage tester or multimeter. Replace the switch if it does not pass power when ON.
- Inspect power cord and plug: Unplug the disposal (or turn breaker off if hardwired). Check for cuts, burns, or loose prongs. Replace the power cord kit if damaged.
- Check junction box on disposal: With power OFF, remove the small metal cover plate on the bottom/side of the American Standard disposal where the cord or house wires enter. Confirm wire nuts are tight and no wires are burned or broken. Re-secure the cover before restoring power.
- Test again: Restore power at the breaker and try the switch. If the unit still shows E1 or remains dead, the internal wiring or control may be faulty and a replacement disposal or professional service is recommended.
