E2
American Standard Rotor Jam / Locked Motor

Garbage disposal hums but does not spin; some smart sink switch modules or under-sink control boxes may display E2 indicating a locked rotor or overload condition.

Possible Causes

Foreign object jammed between shredder ring and impellers, Jammed turntable plate, Bent or seized impeller arm, Overheated motor due to prolonged stall

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposal with power on.

  • Press the reset button: On most American Standard disposals, there is a red reset button on the bottom. Press it firmly until it clicks.
  • Manually free the jam:
    • Insert a 1/4" Allen (hex) wrench into the hex socket at the bottom center of the motor (if equipped).
    • Turn the wrench back and forth to free the rotor. Do not use excessive force.
    • If there is no hex socket, use a wooden broom handle from the top opening to gently move the turntable back and forth.
  • Remove foreign objects: With power still OFF, use tongs or pliers (not your fingers) to remove bones, metal, glass, or other debris from the grinding chamber.
  • Test operation: Restore power at the breaker, run cold water, then briefly turn the switch ON. If the unit spins freely and the E2 clears, run water for 30–60 seconds.
  • If humming persists: The motor windings or bearings may be damaged from overheating. In that case, replacement of the entire disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
