Possible Causes
Overloading the disposal with hard food waste, Motor windings partially shorted, Jammed or stiff bearings increasing current draw, Undersized or failing circuit breaker
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut OFF the circuit breaker before inspection.
- Reset the overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the American Standard disposal until it clicks.
- Check for partial jams: With power OFF, use a flashlight to look into the chamber. Use tongs to remove fibrous foods, bones, or foreign objects. Rotate the turntable with a wooden dowel to ensure it moves freely.
- Run with light load: Restore power, run cold water, and turn the unit on with only small soft scraps to see if it runs without tripping.
- Check electrical circuit: Confirm the disposal is on a dedicated 15A or 20A circuit as specified by American Standard. If other heavy loads share the circuit, move them or consult an electrician.
- Persistent tripping: If the unit trips with no load or very light load, the motor is likely failing. Replacement of the disposal is recommended rather than attempting motor repair.
