Possible Causes
Running disposal for extended periods without rest, Grinding very hard materials causing high load, Blocked ventilation around motor housing, Failing motor with increased internal resistance
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and allow the unit to cool for at least 15–20 minutes before attempting reset.
- Allow cooling: Do not repeatedly try to start a hot motor. Let the American Standard disposal cool completely.
- Press reset: After cooling, press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks.
- Reduce load: When restarting, run strong cold water and feed only small amounts of food at a time. Avoid bones, fruit pits, and fibrous materials.
- Check ventilation: Ensure stored items under the sink are not packed tightly around the disposal, blocking airflow around the motor housing.
- Persistent overheating: If the unit overheats and trips again with light use, the motor is likely failing. Plan for replacement of the disposal.
