Possible Causes
Broken impeller arm, Loose turntable plate on motor shaft, Foreign metal object trapped in grinding ring, Worn or cracked shredder ring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the switch and shut OFF the breaker. Never attempt to catch or stop moving parts with your hand.
- Inspect chamber: Shine a flashlight into the disposal. Use tongs to remove any screws, coins, or metal fragments.
- Check impeller movement: With power OFF, use a wooden stick to gently move the impeller arms. They should pivot freely but not feel loose on the turntable.
- Listen for looseness: Gently tap the turntable with the stick. If it clanks or feels detached from the shaft, the internal mounting is compromised.
- Test briefly: Restore power, run water, and turn the unit on for 1–2 seconds. If loud metal-on-metal noise persists, shut it off immediately.
- Replace disposal: Internal grinding components on American Standard disposals are not designed for field replacement. A noisy, damaged grinding assembly requires replacement of the entire unit.
