Possible Causes
Worn motor shaft seal, Corrosion from long-term leakage, Cracked lower housing, Over-tightened plumbing stressing housing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and unplug the disposal if possible. Place a pan or towel under the unit to catch drips.
- Confirm leak source: Dry the exterior of the American Standard disposal. Run water without operating the unit and watch for drips from the very bottom center of the housing (not from plumbing joints).
- Check plumbing connections: Verify that the discharge elbow, dishwasher inlet hose, and sink flange are not the source of the leak. Tighten clamps and slip nuts as needed.
- Identify internal leak: If water emerges from the bottom motor housing, the internal shaft seal has failed.
- Do not open housing: The internal seal is not user-serviceable. Opening the motor housing voids safety certifications.
- Replace disposal: Plan to replace the entire disposal. Disconnect the drain, dishwasher hose, and mounting assembly per American Standard instructions, then install a new unit with fresh plumber's putty at the sink flange.
