Possible Causes
Worn Astracast shredder ring teeth, Rounded or worn impeller lugs, Corroded grinding plate surface, Use of inappropriate items (e.g., shells, bones) causing premature wear
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before inspecting the grinding chamber.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Shine a light into the chamber. Look for smooth, rounded shredder ring teeth and impeller lugs instead of sharp edges.
- Step 2 – Clean buildup: Mineral and grease buildup can reduce grinding efficiency. Pour a mixture of ice cubes and coarse salt into the disposal and run it with cold water for 30–60 seconds to scour the chamber. Then switch OFF power and inspect again.
- Step 3 – Avoid sharpening myths: Do not attempt to sharpen Astracast grinding components with tools or abrasive blocks; this can damage the unit.
- Step 4 – Evaluate replacement: If grinding performance remains poor and components are visibly worn, the grinding assembly or entire disposal should be replaced.
- Step 5 – Adjust usage habits: In the future, avoid grinding very hard materials and always run plenty of cold water.
Warning: Never insert metal tools into the disposal while it is connected to power.
