Possible Causes
Prolonged operation under heavy load, Partially jammed grinding plate causing high current draw, Failing Astracast motor windings, Blocked motor cooling vents
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Immediately switch OFF the disposal and turn OFF power at the breaker. Do not continue to operate a smoking or burning-smell unit.
- Step 1 – Allow cooling: Let the unit cool for at least 30 minutes. Do not reset or restart until it is cool to the touch.
- Step 2 – Clear jams: With power OFF, check for and remove any obstructions in the grinding chamber. Rotate the grinding plate manually to ensure it moves freely.
- Step 3 – Inspect wiring: Open the Astracast junction box and check for scorched or melted wires. Repair or replace damaged wiring using proper connectors.
- Step 4 – Reset overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power and briefly test with water running. If the smell returns quickly, the motor windings are likely damaged.
- Step 5 – Replace unit: A disposal that repeatedly overheats or emits a burnt smell should be replaced to avoid fire risk.
Warning: Do not ignore burning smells; they indicate a serious electrical fault.
