Possible Causes
Water intrusion into Astracast motor housing, Pinched or damaged power cable, Shorted motor windings, Loose wire contacting metal housing in junction box
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Leave the breaker OFF and unplug the unit if possible. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips instantly.
- Step 1 – Inspect for leaks: Check for any signs of water around the disposal, especially at the bottom and junction box. Fix any plumbing leaks before proceeding.
- Step 2 – Check power cord and plug: For corded models, inspect the cord and plug for damage. Replace if insulation is cut or melted.
- Step 3 – Inspect junction box: Open the Astracast junction box and look for bare wires touching the metal housing or each other. Correct and re-insulate as needed.
- Step 4 – Isolation test: Disconnect the disposal wires from the supply and cap them. Turn the breaker ON. If it holds, the fault is in the disposal; if it still trips, the issue is in the house wiring.
- Step 5 – Replace disposal: If the breaker only trips when the Astracast unit is connected, the motor or internal wiring is shorted and the unit should be replaced.
Warning: Ground faults near water are extremely dangerous; if unsure, contact a qualified electrician.
