Possible Causes
Grease and food residue on Astracast grinding chamber walls, Sludge buildup in discharge elbow and P-trap, Bacteria growth on rubber splash guard, Infrequent flushing with water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal at the wall switch before cleaning inside the chamber.
- Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the Astracast rubber splash guard (if removable) and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. This is a common odor source.
- Step 2 – Deodorize chamber: Pour a mixture of ice cubes and coarse rock salt into the disposal. Run cold water and operate the unit for 30–60 seconds to scour the chamber.
- Step 3 – Use baking soda and vinegar: With the unit OFF, pour 1/2 cup baking soda into the disposal, followed by 1 cup white vinegar. Allow it to foam for 10–15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Step 4 – Clean drain trap: If odors persist, remove and clean the P-trap and horizontal waste pipe to remove sludge.
- Step 5 – Maintenance routine: Run the Astracast disposal regularly with plenty of cold water to prevent buildup.
Warning: Avoid using bleach or harsh chemicals frequently; they can damage rubber components and septic systems.
