Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed between Astracast grinding plate and shredder ring, Seized motor shaft on Astracast induction motor, Bent impeller lugs on Astracast grinding plate, Worn or damaged lower motor bearing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and isolate power at the breaker. Never put your hand inside the Astracast disposal while it is connected to power.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Shine a torch into the sink opening. Look for metal utensils, glass, stones, or large bone fragments lodged in the grinding chamber.
- Step 2 – Manual freeing using hex key: Many Astracast disposals have a hex (Allen) socket in the center of the motor base. Insert the correct-size hex key and gently rock it back and forth to free the jammed grinding plate. Do not use excessive force.
- Step 3 – Use a wooden tool from above: From the sink opening, use a wooden spoon or broom handle to rotate the grinding plate back and forth until it moves freely. Remove any visible debris with pliers or tongs.
- Step 4 – Reset overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks. Restore power at the breaker and briefly test the unit with cold water running.
- Step 5 – Evaluate motor condition: If the unit still only hums or trips the reset, the motor shaft or lower bearing may be seized. At this point, the motor assembly or entire Astracast disposal typically needs replacement.
Warning: Never attempt to free a jam with your fingers. Always use tools and ensure power is isolated.
