Astracast Outlet Port or Discharge Elbow Blockage

Disposal runs but water backs up into the sink; grinding seems normal but water drains very slowly or not at all.

Possible Causes

Clogged Astracast discharge elbow, Blocked rubber splash guard restricting flow, Food sludge buildup in Astracast outlet port, Obstruction in sink trap directly after disposal

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal and switch OFF power at the breaker before disassembling any plumbing.

  • Step 1 – Run water and test: With the unit OFF, run cold water. If water stands in the sink, the blockage is downstream of the grinding chamber.
  • Step 2 – Inspect splash guard: Remove the Astracast rubber splash guard (if removable). Clean off grease and food buildup that may be restricting flow.
  • Step 3 – Remove discharge elbow: Place a bucket under the disposal outlet. Loosen the slip nut on the Astracast discharge elbow and remove the elbow. Clear any compacted food or debris using a bottle brush.
  • Step 4 – Check P-trap and waste pipe: Remove the P-trap and inspect for clogs. Clean thoroughly and reassemble, ensuring all gaskets are seated correctly.
  • Step 5 – Flush system: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly operate the disposal to flush remaining debris. Check for leaks at all joints.

Warning: Do not use chemical drain cleaners in an Astracast disposal; they can damage seals and metal components and pose a burn hazard during disassembly.
