Possible Causes
Metal utensil dropped into Astracast grinding chamber, Loose screw or mounting hardware inside chamber, Broken glass or ceramic pieces trapped at shredder ring, Detached impeller lug contacting shredder ring
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF the wall switch and isolate power at the breaker. Never reach into the disposal with power connected.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Shine a bright light into the sink opening. Look for foreign objects such as cutlery, bottle caps, or glass shards.
- Step 2 – Remove objects with tools: Use long-nose pliers, tongs, or a magnetic pickup tool to remove visible items. Do not use your fingers.
- Step 3 – Rotate grinding plate: Use a wooden spoon handle from above or a hex key on the bottom shaft (if provided) to rotate the grinding plate and expose hidden debris. Remove any additional objects found.
- Step 4 – Inspect impeller lugs: Check that the swinging impeller lugs on the Astracast grinding plate move freely and are not broken or bent into the shredder ring.
- Step 5 – Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly operate the disposal. If abnormal noise persists, internal damage to the grinding plate or shredder ring may require replacement of the grinding assembly or entire unit.
Warning: Glass fragments can be extremely sharp; wear cut-resistant gloves and eye protection.
