Possible Causes

Foreign object jammed between shredder ring and impellers, Bent impeller plate, Seized motor shaft, Worn motor start components in control module

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF the circuit breaker. Never reach into the chamber with power connected. Use tools, not fingers, to remove obstructions.

  • Step 1 – Attempt manual freeing: Insert the Electrolux jam-buster wrench or a 1/4" hex key into the bottom center of the motor shaft (if provided). Rotate back and forth firmly to free the impeller plate.
  • Step 2 – Remove visible obstructions: From the sink opening, use long pliers or tongs to remove bones, metal, glass, or fibrous material wrapped around the impellers.
  • Step 3 – Reset the overload: After clearing the jam, press the reset button on the bottom of the disposal. Restore power and test.
  • Step 4 – Listen for smooth operation: If the unit still only hums or trips the reset immediately, the motor shaft may be seized or the internal start circuitry damaged. In that case, replacement of the disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
