Possible Causes
Overloading chamber with food, Dull shredder ring and impellers causing strain, Partial jam in grinding chamber, Weak internal overload protector
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before inspecting the unit. Never reset repeatedly without investigating the cause.
- Step 1 – Inspect for jams: With power off, use a flashlight and tongs to remove any large bones, utensils, or fibrous material. Use the bottom hex socket (if present) to rotate the motor shaft and ensure it spins freely.
- Step 2 – Adjust usage habits: Avoid feeding large quantities at once. Run cold water before, during, and after grinding. Do not grind fibrous items like corn husks or celery.
- Step 3 – Check for dull grinding components: If the unit struggles with small loads or makes a straining sound, the shredder ring and impellers may be worn. Replacement of the grinding assembly or entire disposal may be required.
- Step 4 – Reset and test: Press the reset button on the bottom of the unit. Restore power and test with a small amount of soft food waste.
- If overloads continue with light use, the internal overload protector or motor windings may be failing. Replacement of the disposal is recommended.
