Possible Causes
Loose mounting ring, Misaligned sink flange, Worn or torn mounting gasket, Bent impeller plate causing imbalance
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before touching the disposal body or mounting hardware.
- Step 1 – Check for loose mounting: Grasp the disposal body and try to move it up and down. If there is play, tighten the mounting ring by rotating it clockwise until the unit is firmly locked to the sink flange.
- Step 2 – Inspect mounting gasket: Look between the sink flange and mounting ring for a damaged or displaced rubber gasket. Replace the gasket if it is cracked, flattened, or missing.
- Step 3 – Check for internal imbalance: With power off, look inside the chamber for a bent impeller or missing impeller lug. Rotate the plate with a wooden tool to feel for rough spots.
- Step 4 – Test with water: Restore power, run a strong stream of water, and operate the disposal. Slight vibration is normal; strong shaking indicates internal damage.
- If vibration remains severe after tightening and gasket replacement, the impeller plate or motor shaft may be bent. Replacement of the disposal is recommended.
