Possible Causes
Weak start winding, Failed start capacitor (if used), Internal thermal overload tripping instantly, Low supply voltage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before inspecting the unit. Do not repeatedly cycle the switch as this can damage the motor further.
- Step 1 – Verify free rotation: With power off, use the bottom hex socket or a wooden tool from the top to rotate the impeller plate. It should turn smoothly without binding.
- Step 2 – Check supply voltage: Have a qualified person measure voltage at the disposal connection; it should be close to 120 V AC. Low voltage can prevent proper starting.
- Step 3 – Inspect internal components: Some Electrolux models use a start capacitor or electronic start module. If accessible, look for bulging or leaking capacitors and replace the start module if available as a separate part.
- Step 4 – Reset overload: Press the reset button and test again briefly.
- If the motor still only hums and trips, the start winding is likely failing. Replacement of the disposal is usually required.
