Possible Causes

Grease and food residue on shredder ring, Sludge in discharge elbow and P-trap, Bacteria growth on rubber splash guard, Infrequent flushing with water

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety First: Turn OFF the disposal before cleaning. Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners inside the unit.

  • Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber baffle (if removable) and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. This is a common source of odor.
  • Step 2 – Deodorize chamber: Pour a tray of ice cubes and a half-cup of coarse salt into the disposal. Run cold water and operate the unit for 30–60 seconds to scour the chamber.
  • Step 3 – Use baking soda and vinegar: Sprinkle 1/2 cup baking soda into the disposal, then slowly add 1 cup white vinegar. Let it foam for 10–15 minutes, then flush with hot water.
  • Step 4 – Clean drain piping: If odors persist, remove and clean the P-trap and discharge elbow to remove sludge.
  • Step 5 – Maintenance: Run cold water for 20–30 seconds after each use to flush food particles completely through the drain.
