Possible Causes
Excessive wear at impeller pivot points, Broken impeller rivets, Debris lodged under impeller lugs, Manufacturing wear over time
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety First: Turn OFF power at the breaker before inspecting the grinding chamber.
- Step 1 – Inspect impellers: Shine a flashlight into the chamber and gently move each impeller lug with a wooden tool. Some movement is normal, but excessive play or visible damage is not.
- Step 2 – Remove debris: Clear any food or foreign material lodged under the impellers using tongs or a wooden stick.
- Step 3 – Test operation: Restore power, run water, and operate the disposal. If the clacking is minor and performance is normal, continued use may be acceptable.
- Step 4 – Replace if severe: If noise is loud and persistent or grinding performance is reduced, the impeller assembly is worn. Replace the disposal, as impellers are not typically user-serviceable on Electrolux units.
