Garbage disposal makes loud metal-on-metal grinding or screeching noises
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Metal utensil or screw in chamber, Broken glass pieces, Bent impeller lugs, Damaged shredder ring in Everbilt unit
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the disposal and switch OFF the breaker or unplug it. Do not reach into the unit with your hand.
- Inspect chamber: Remove the splash guard and use a flashlight to look inside the Everbilt grinding chamber.
- Remove foreign objects: Use long-nose pliers or tongs to carefully remove any metal, glass, or other hard objects.
- Rotate impeller plate: Insert an Allen wrench into the bottom hex socket and rotate to ensure the plate moves freely and no objects remain trapped.
- Test briefly: Restore power, run water, and turn the unit ON for a few seconds. If the noise is gone, normal operation can resume.
- If noise persists: The impeller lugs or shredder ring may be bent or broken. Because these parts are not user-serviceable on Everbilt disposals, replace the disposal unit.
