Possible Causes
Extended heavy grinding load, Blocked ventilation around motor housing, Failing motor windings, Sticking rotor causing high current draw
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and circuit breaker before touching the unit.
- Allow cooling time: Leave the unit powered off for at least 20–30 minutes to allow the internal thermal protector to reset.
- Check for jams: After cooling, use an Allen key in the bottom shaft socket to ensure the grinding plate spins freely. Remove any debris with tongs from the sink opening.
- Improve ventilation: Make sure stored items under the sink are not packed tightly around the Franke motor housing. Provide at least a few centimeters of clearance for airflow.
- Test with light load: Restore power, run cold water, and test the disposal with only soft food waste. If it overheats and stops again within a minute, the motor windings may be failing.
- Replace motor unit if needed: Persistent E3 errors even with light loads usually indicate a failing Franke disposer motor unit. Replacement of the entire motor/grinding assembly is recommended.
