Possible Causes
Moisture inside motor housing, Damaged motor insulation, Water leak into electrical junction box, Cracked Franke disposer casing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Immediately turn OFF the breaker and do not reset a repeatedly tripping GFCI without finding the cause. Risk of electric shock.
- Inspect for leaks: Check around the Franke disposer body, sink flange, and dishwasher inlet for any signs of water leakage. Repair any plumbing leaks first.
- Check junction box: Open the electrical junction box or cord connection under the sink. Look for water, corrosion, or burnt wiring. Dry thoroughly and replace any damaged connectors.
- Examine disposer casing: Look for cracks or damage in the Franke disposer housing that could allow water into the motor compartment.
- Dry-out period: If a minor splash occurred, allow the unit to dry for 24 hours with power disconnected, then test again. Persistent E6 or GFCI trips indicate internal motor insulation failure.
- Replace unit if necessary: If the motor windings are compromised or the casing is cracked, replace the entire Franke disposer motor unit. Do not continue using a unit with suspected ground faults.
