Possible Causes

Shorted triac or power transistor on PCB, Excessive inrush current from failing motor, Incorrect line voltage, Internal short in motor windings

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker and do not repeatedly attempt to start the unit, as this can worsen damage.

  • Verify supply voltage: Use a multimeter (if qualified) to confirm that the line voltage at the Franke control module matches the rating on the disposer nameplate (e.g., 120 V or 230 V).
  • Check for rotor binding: With power off, rotate the grinding plate using the Allen key at the bottom. It should turn smoothly. Any stiffness may indicate internal motor issues causing high inrush current.
  • Inspect PCB for damage: Remove the control box cover and look for burnt or cracked power components (triacs, resistors). If present, the board must be replaced.
  • Motor isolation test (advanced): If possible, connect the motor directly to a test cord with proper protection. If it trips breakers or hums heavily, the motor is defective.
  • Replace faulty component: Replace the Franke control PCB if only the board is damaged, or the Franke disposer motor unit if the motor is the source of the fault.
