Possible Causes
Severely jammed grinding chamber, Broken bearing inside motor, Warped grinding plate contacting stationary ring, Internal mechanical seizure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and confirm the switch is off.
- Attempt manual freeing: Insert the Allen key into the bottom shaft and try to rotate the motor both directions. If it will not move at all, do not force it excessively.
- Inspect grinding chamber: From the sink opening, use a flashlight and tongs to remove any visible foreign objects (utensils, stones, large bones). Never use your bare hands.
- Check for plate warping: If the plate rotates but scrapes heavily against the stationary grind ring, the plate or ring may be warped or misaligned.
- Reset and test: Press the red overload reset button, restore power, run water, and briefly test. If E9 returns immediately, internal damage is likely.
- Replace assembly: A persistent E9 with a locked or grinding motor typically requires replacement of the entire Franke disposer motor and grinding assembly.
