Possible Causes

Food residue trapped under splash guard, Grease buildup on grind ring and chamber walls, Bacteria growth in P-trap, Infrequent flushing with water

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety note: Do not use harsh chemical drain cleaners in a disposal; they can damage components and create fumes.

  • Step 1 – Clean splash guard: With power off, remove the rubber splash guard if it is removable. Scrub both sides with hot, soapy water and a brush. If non-removable, scrub in place with a long-handled brush.
  • Step 2 – Clean chamber: Pour a mixture of baking soda (1/2 cup) followed by white vinegar (1 cup) into the disposal. Allow it to foam for 5–10 minutes.
  • Step 3 – Ice and salt cleaning: Fill the disposal with ice cubes and add 1/4 cup of rock salt. Run cold water and briefly operate the disposal to scour the grind ring.
  • Step 4 – Flush with hot water: Run hot water for several minutes to rinse away loosened debris.
  • Step 5 – Deodorize: Grind small citrus peels (lemon, orange) with cold water to leave a fresh scent.
  • Step 6 – Maintain: Regularly flush the disposal with plenty of water after use and avoid leaving food waste sitting in the chamber.
