How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Turn off the wall switch and disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the disposal. Never reach into the disposal with your bare hands.
- Step 1 – Inspect from above: Shine a flashlight into the sink opening. Look for metal utensils, bones, stones, or other foreign objects.
- Step 2 – Remove visible objects: Use long pliers or tongs to remove any debris. Do not use your fingers.
- Step 3 – Free the impeller plate: Insert the Frigidaire-supplied hex wrench (or a 1/4" Allen key) into the hex socket on the bottom of the motor. Rotate back and forth until the shaft moves freely.
- Step 4 – Manual rotation from top (if no hex socket): Use a wooden spoon handle or dowel through the sink opening to push the impeller arms and rotate the plate.
- Step 5 – Reset and test: Press the red reset button on the bottom, restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn the switch ON. If the unit spins freely and the hum is gone, the jam is cleared.
- Step 6 – If humming persists: The motor rotor or bearings may be seized. Continued power can overheat the motor. Replace the disposal or have a technician inspect the motor assembly.
