Possible Causes
Metal utensil dropped into disposal, Loose screws or mounting hardware inside chamber, Broken glass or stones in grind ring, Detached impeller arm
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety warning: Turn off the wall switch and disconnect power at the breaker or unplug the unit. Never reach into the disposal with your bare hands.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Use a flashlight to look into the disposal from the sink opening. Identify any foreign objects such as screws, bottle caps, glass, or utensils.
- Step 2 – Remove debris: Use long-nose pliers, tongs, or a magnetic pickup tool to remove all foreign objects. Rotate the impeller plate with a wooden tool to expose hidden items.
- Step 3 – Check impeller arms: Gently move each impeller arm. They should pivot but not be loose or broken. If an impeller is broken or missing, the grinding plate assembly is damaged.
- Step 4 – Inspect mounting ring: Confirm that the sink baffle and mounting ring are seated correctly and not rubbing against the impeller plate.
- Step 5 – Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn the disposal on. If the noise is gone, the issue was debris.
- Step 6 – If noise persists: A bent impeller or damaged grind ring may be causing permanent metal contact. In this case, replacement of the disposal is recommended.
