Garbage disposal vibrates excessively and the sink or countertop shakes when the unit is running.

Safety first: Turn off power at the breaker or unplug the disposal before working under the sink.

• Step 1 – Check for chamber debris: Look inside the disposal with a flashlight and remove any large or unevenly distributed debris using tongs. Rotate the impeller plate with a wooden tool to ensure it moves freely.
• Step 2 – Inspect mounting ring: From under the sink, grasp the disposal and try to move it up and down. If it wobbles, the mounting ring may be loose.
• Step 3 – Tighten mounting assembly: Rotate the mounting ring clockwise to tighten it against the sink flange. Ensure all three mounting lugs are fully engaged.
• Step 4 – Check rubber gasket and sink flange: Inspect the rubber mounting gasket between the disposal and sink flange. If it is torn, deformed, or missing, remove the disposal and replace the gasket. Verify the sink flange is sealed firmly with plumber’s putty.
• Step 5 – Test operation: Reinstall the disposal, restore power, run water, and test. Vibration should be significantly reduced.
• Step 6 – If vibration remains severe: The impeller plate may be bent or the motor shaft out of balance. Replacement of the disposal is typically required.
