Possible Causes
Misaligned batch-feed stopper, Worn internal switch mechanism, Debris preventing stopper from seating, Failed magnetic sensor (on some models)
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the disposal or turn OFF the breaker before inspecting the stopper area.
- Step 1 – Inspect stopper: Examine the batch-feed stopper for damage, missing magnets (if equipped), or worn sealing surfaces. Clean off any food debris.
- Step 2 – Seat stopper correctly: Insert the stopper into the sink opening and rotate it to the ON position as indicated in the GE manual. Ensure it fully engages and presses down.
- Step 3 – Clean switch area: With power off, clean around the stopper opening and splash guard to remove buildup that may prevent full engagement.
- Step 4 – Evaluate internal switch: If the disposal still does not start but runs when wired directly (technician test), the internal batch-feed switch assembly is faulty. Replacement of the disposal is typically required, as the switch is not user-serviceable.
Warning: Do not attempt to bypass the batch-feed safety switch; this can create a serious hazard.
