Possible Causes

Leak from sink flange onto motor, Leak from dishwasher inlet or discharge elbow, Cracked housing allowing water into electrical compartment

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF the breaker and do not use the disposal until leaks are corrected.

  • Step 1 – Identify leak source: Run water into the sink (without running the disposal) and inspect the flange, dishwasher inlet, and discharge elbow for drips onto the disposal body.
  • Step 2 – Repair external leaks: Reseal the sink flange with plumber's putty, tighten or replace hose clamps, and replace discharge gaskets as needed.
  • Step 3 – Check for bottom leaks: If water appears to seep from the bottom housing, the internal seals are compromised and the disposal must be replaced.
  • Step 4 – Dry and test: After repairs, allow the area to dry completely, then restore power and test the GFCI. If it still trips when water runs, replace the disposal.

Warning: Water and electricity are a dangerous combination; do not ignore GFCI trips.
