Slow Seepage from Flange or Fittings
Garbage disposal causes under-sink cabinet to be damp or moldy without obvious dripping
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Minor seep at sink flange gasket, Loose discharge elbow screws, Condensation on cold disposal body, Micro-cracks in housing
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power and remove stored items from under the sink.
- Step 1 – Dry and dust area: Thoroughly dry the cabinet and dust around all joints with talcum powder or baking soda. Run water and the disposal briefly, then look for tracks in the powder indicating leaks.
- Step 2 – Tighten fittings: Snug the sink flange mounting screws and discharge elbow screws. Do not overtighten.
- Step 3 – Monitor condensation: If moisture appears only on the exterior of a cold disposal in humid conditions, improve ventilation and avoid storing moisture-sensitive items directly under the unit.
- Step 4 – Replace if housing leaks: If seepage is traced to the body of the disposal, replace the unit.
Warning: Long-term moisture can damage cabinetry and promote mold; address promptly.
