Organic Buildup in Grinding Chamber and Drain
Garbage disposal emits a persistent bad odor even after running
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Food residue trapped under splash guard, Grease buildup on grind ring, Sludge in P-trap, Infrequent flushing with water
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power before cleaning inside the disposal.
- Step 1 – Clean splash guard: Remove the rubber splash guard (if removable) and scrub both sides with hot soapy water and a brush. This area often traps odor-causing residue.
- Step 2 – Clean grinding chamber: Pour a mixture of 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup white vinegar into the disposal. Let it foam for 5–10 minutes, then flush with hot water.
- Step 3 – Deodorize with ice and citrus: With cold water running, feed a tray of ice cubes and a few small pieces of lemon or orange peel into the disposal while running. This helps scour the grind ring.
- Step 4 – Check drain trap: If odors persist, clean the P-trap under the sink, as sludge there can cause smells to back up through the disposal.
Warning: Do not use bleach or harsh chemicals regularly; they can damage rubber components and metal surfaces.
