Jammed Impeller / Locked Rotor
Garbage disposal hums but does not grind or spin

Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed between impellers and grind ring, Seized motor shaft, Bent impeller plate, Worn motor bearings causing lock-up
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and shut off the circuit breaker. Never put your hand into the disposal while it is connected to power.
- Step 1 – Use the supplied GE jam wrench or Allen key: On most GE disposals, there is a hex socket in the center of the bottom of the unit. Insert the GE jam wrench or a 1/4" Allen key and rotate back and forth to free the impeller plate.
- Step 2 – Clear visible obstructions from above: With power OFF, use tongs or pliers (not your fingers) to remove any foreign objects (bones, utensils, glass, stones) from the grinding chamber. Rotate the impellers manually with a wooden spoon handle to ensure free movement.
- Step 3 – Reset the overload: After freeing the jam, press the red reset button on the bottom of the disposal until it clicks. Restore power and briefly test the unit with cold water running.
- Step 4 – Check for recurring jams: If the unit jams again immediately or the impeller plate will not rotate freely even with the wrench, the impeller plate or motor may be damaged or warped. Replacement of the disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
Warning: Never attempt to force rotation with power applied. Doing so can cause serious injury.
