Acoustic Amplification / Worn Bearings / Loose Components
Garbage disposal is unusually loud compared to normal operation
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Loose mounting hardware, Worn motor bearings, Thin or stainless sink amplifying noise, Missing sound baffle or splash guard
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power before touching the unit.
- Step 1 – Check for loose mounting: Tighten the mounting ring screws and ensure the disposal is fully locked into the mounting tabs.
- Step 2 – Inspect splash guard: Verify the rubber splash guard/baffle is properly seated in the sink opening. Replace if torn or missing; this significantly reduces noise.
- Step 3 – Listen for bearing noise: With water running and the disposal on, listen for a high-pitched whine or grinding from the motor area (do not touch). Persistent bearing noise indicates motor wear and the unit should be replaced.
- Step 4 – Isolate sink vibration: Add foam or rubber pads between the sink and countertop clips if the sink itself is vibrating excessively.
Warning: Do not attempt to lubricate the disposal; it is a sealed unit and added oils can cause clogs.
