Leaking Discharge Elbow / Tailpiece Connection
Garbage disposal leaks at the side discharge pipe connection to the drain

Possible Causes
Loose discharge elbow screws, Deteriorated rubber discharge gasket, Misaligned PVC trap, Cracked discharge elbow
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power to the disposal. Place a bucket under the P-trap and discharge elbow.
- Step 1 – Inspect the discharge elbow: Locate the discharge elbow where the disposal connects to the sink drain or P-trap. Check for water seeping around the gasket or screws.
- Step 2 – Tighten mounting screws: Use a screwdriver to snug the two discharge elbow screws evenly. Do not overtighten to avoid cracking the elbow.
- Step 3 – Replace gasket if needed: If the rubber discharge gasket is flattened, cracked, or missing, remove the elbow, clean the mating surfaces, and install a new GE-compatible discharge gasket before reassembling.
- Step 4 – Align plumbing: Ensure the P-trap and drain pipes are properly aligned and not putting side pressure on the elbow, which can cause leaks. Adjust or re-cut PVC as needed.
Warning: Use only gaskets and fittings rated for disposal use; improper materials can fail under vibration.
