Possible Causes

Deteriorated plumber's putty under GE sink flange, Loose mounting ring screws, Cracked sink flange, Corroded mounting gasket

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn OFF power at the breaker and unplug the disposal if possible. Place a towel or pan under the unit to catch water.

  • Step 1 – Confirm leak source: Fill the sink with a few inches of water, then release the stopper while observing the area where the sink flange and mounting ring meet. Look for water seeping from the top of the disposal.
  • Step 2 – Tighten mounting screws: Use a screwdriver to snug the three mounting screws on the GE mounting ring evenly. Do not overtighten to the point of deforming the flange.
  • Step 3 – Reseal the sink flange (if still leaking): Support the disposal from below and rotate the mounting ring to release the unit. Remove the old sink flange from above, scrape away old plumber's putty, and apply a fresh 3/8" bead of plumber's putty under the flange lip. Reinsert the flange, reinstall the mounting hardware and fiber/rubber gasket per GE instructions, and retighten evenly.
  • Step 4 – Test for leaks: Reconnect the disposal, run water, and check again for any seepage around the flange.

Warning: The disposal is heavy; support it securely when loosening the mounting ring to avoid injury or damage to plumbing.
