Garbage disposal makes a clicking or clacking noise even when empty

Possible Causes
Impeller lugs striking grind ring due to wear, Debris lodged under lugs, Bent impeller plate
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power before inspecting inside the disposal.
- Step 1 – Inspect impeller lugs: Look inside the disposal and locate the two or more swinging impeller lugs. They should move freely but not be excessively loose.
- Step 2 – Clean around lugs: Use a brush and water to remove any debris lodged around the pivot points.
- Step 3 – Test movement: Gently move each lug with a wooden tool to ensure it swings freely and returns.
- Step 4 – Replace if worn: If lugs are excessively loose, striking the grind ring, or one is missing, the disposal should be replaced.
Warning: Do not attempt to disassemble the grinding plate; this is not a user-serviceable area.
