Foreign Object in Grinding Chamber
Garbage disposal runs but makes a loud metal-on-metal grinding or rattling noise
Advertisements
Possible Causes
Metal utensil dropped into disposal, Loose screws or small hardware in chamber, Broken glass fragments, Loose impeller or grind ring damage
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the wall switch and switch off the breaker. Never reach into the disposal with your hand.
- Step 1 – Visual inspection: Shine a flashlight into the disposal from above. Look for spoons, bottle caps, screws, glass, or stones resting on the impeller plate or against the grind ring.
- Step 2 – Remove debris safely: Use long-nose pliers or kitchen tongs to remove any foreign objects. Rotate the impeller plate manually with a wooden spoon handle to expose hidden items.
- Step 3 – Check impeller movement: Ensure the impeller lugs (the small swinging arms on the plate) move freely. If one is stuck or broken, the disposal may be unbalanced and noisy and should be replaced.
- Step 4 – Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn on the disposal. If the noise persists and no objects remain, the grind ring or bearings may be damaged, requiring replacement of the unit.
Warning: Do not operate the disposal with known foreign objects inside; this can damage the unit and plumbing.
