Possible Causes

Overloading the disposal with food waste, Running disposal without sufficient water, Partially jammed impellers increasing motor load, Failing motor windings drawing excessive current

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Turn off the wall switch before working around the disposal. Do not reset repeatedly without investigating the cause.

  • Step 1 – Reduce load: Run cold water at full flow and feed food waste slowly in small batches. Avoid fibrous materials (celery, corn husks), large bones, or large quantities of starchy foods.
  • Step 2 – Inspect for partial jams: With power OFF, use a flashlight and tongs to check for objects lodged around the impellers and grind ring. Use the bottom hex socket with a jam wrench to ensure the impeller plate spins freely.
  • Step 3 – Reset correctly: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the GE disposal until it clicks. Restore power and test with water running and a very small amount of soft food.
  • Step 4 – Evaluate motor condition: If the reset trips even with light loads and free rotation, the motor windings or internal overload may be failing. In this case, replacement of the disposal is recommended.

Warning: Repeated tripping indicates an underlying problem. Do not bypass or tape down the reset button; this is a critical safety device.
