Possible Causes
Failed wall switch contacts, Loose switch wiring, Open wire between switch and disposal, Miswired switch box
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the circuit breaker before removing any switch plates or working on wiring.
- Step 1 – Verify outlet power: If the disposal is corded, unplug it and test the outlet with another device. If the outlet works, the issue is between the switch and the disposal.
- Step 2 – Inspect wall switch: Remove the switch cover plate, pull the switch out carefully, and check for loose wires or burned contacts. Tighten terminal screws and ensure wires are secure.
- Step 3 – Replace switch if needed: If the switch feels loose, makes crackling sounds, or shows signs of heat damage, replace it with a new 15A or 20A single-pole switch rated for motor loads.
- Step 4 – Test continuity: Use a multimeter (with power off) to check continuity through the switch when toggled. No continuity indicates a bad switch.
Warning: If you are not experienced with electrical work, hire a licensed electrician to service the switch and wiring.
