Disposal hums when switched on but the grinding plate does not turn

Possible Causes
Foreign object jammed between grind ring and impellers, Jammed shredder ring, Bent or seized impeller, Motor rotor locked due to debris
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and shut off the circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposer with your hand.
- Use the InSinkErator Jam-Buster wrench: Insert the 1/4" hex wrench into the hex socket at the bottom center of the disposal. Work it back and forth firmly until it rotates freely 360°.
- Clear debris from the grind chamber: From above, use tongs or pliers to remove any visible foreign objects (utensils, bones, glass, etc.). Do not use your fingers.
- Reset the overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks.
- Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn on the disposal. If it spins freely and no hum persists, the jam is cleared.
- If the plate will not free up: The motor or bearings may be seized. Replacement of the disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
