Disposal hums when switched on but the grinding plate does not turn

Safety first: Turn off the wall switch and shut off the circuit breaker. Never reach into the disposer with your hand.

• Use the InSinkErator Jam-Buster wrench: Insert the 1/4" hex wrench into the hex socket at the bottom center of the disposal. Work it back and forth firmly until it rotates freely 360°.
• Clear debris from the grind chamber: From above, use tongs or pliers to remove any visible foreign objects (utensils, bones, glass, etc.). Do not use your fingers.
• Reset the overload: Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit until it clicks.
• Test operation: Restore power, run cold water, and briefly turn on the disposal. If it spins freely and no hum persists, the jam is cleared.
• If the plate will not free up: The motor or bearings may be seized. Replacement of the disposal is usually more economical than motor repair.
